I think they still use banner ads too somewhere but there's hacks to get rid of those

Windows users should try outpost firewall. It has a built in plugin that blocks the fuck outta ad servers. There's a free version and a paid version.

This statement is incorrect. At the installation stage the program gives you an option of:
Help Support MSN+ - Ad Supported
and
Do not support MSN+ - No Ads
Something like that anyway, point is it gives you the option of installing the adware or not.

aparently even if you selcet no adds, it still puts in spyware .. you may not see adds but spyware is there
