Make your own Nintendo DS Games for free!

Submitted by on December 14, 2009 – 1:57 am7 Comments

If it begins with a #include and ends in a semi-colon our friend Jason Appelbaum is all over it. This week he’s in studio covering a subject near and dear to our hearts — Nintendo DS Homebrew.

Let’s face it, the Nintendo DS is a happy little platform full of hacking potential. And with a well established homebrew community it’s the perfect device to start your next weekend project with. Jason takes you from Homebrew 101, including carts and roms, to getting the Dev tools and building your first Hello World app.

I have looked for the R4i cards and found some that look like the fakes. Could you list a site that sells the legitimate R4i. It did not look like you can buy off the r4ultra.com site.

    http://www.r4ultra.com/anti_fake.htm

    Thanks

Just a little heads up- in the DS community, the R4 is a sign of a noob.
Like a really, really bad noob.

There are no original R4s anymore. The company that made them is long gone. Now there are only fakes and clones. And they all suck. They are released by companies that stop their updates quickly and then you are left with a useless, ugly cart.

And R4s are illegal in several countries now (Japan and Australia being the most prominent) while other, actually _decent_, carts are still legal.

There have even been some clone R4s which have actually DAMAGED ds hardware (they short-circuit it and blow the fuses).

Get an AceKard 2i (and the kick-ass open-source unoff. firmware AKAIO) for about $14 (with shipping) and save yourself the humiliation. It’s frequently updated too!
Or, if you have the extra cash, go for the Cyclo DS Evo (incredibly feature-rich but also incredibly expensive and not DSi-compadible), a nice M3i Zero (awesome, but prone to hardware failures), an E-Z flash V+ (meh- it’s pretty average) or just a Supercard DSONE.

Basically, R4s are to be treated as a disease.
